Designed by Helmut Jahn of Murphy/Jahn Architects and constructed primarily by ITO JV, the airport has the world’s tallest free-standing control tower, and the world’s third largest single-building airport terminal. Suvarnabhumi is the 3rd busiest airport in Asia, and the busiest in the country, having handled 42.7 million passengers in 2010, and is also a major air cargo hub. The airport inherited the airport code BKK from Don Mueang after the older airport ceased international commercial flights.         Situated about 30 km (18 mi) or 40 minutes by car from central Bangkok, the modern Suvarnabhumi International  Airport which opened in September 2006 is located in Racha Thewa in Bang Phli district, a district of Samut Prakarn province.

To get to Bangkok Airport:

From the North on the Bangkok-Chonburi motorway, take the turn off for Suvarnabhumi Airport. Continue on this eight-lane access road to the airport’s north entrance. From the north-west on the Rom Klao elevated highway and King Kaew road, take the turn off for Suvarnabhumi Airport. Continue on this six-lane access road, passing the customs-free zone to the airport entrance.

From south on the Bangna-Trat road and the Burapavithee expressway, take the turn off for Suvarnabhumi Airport. Continue on the four-lane connecting road, passing the long-term parking area and public transportation centre, before arriving at the terminal.

From the north-east on the Ladkrabang (Onnuj) road, take the turn off for Suvarnabhumi Airport.
